Difference between a wired and wireless router

 

We all know that the internet connection in our homes, offices and other places is run using a router. A router connects local networks to other local networks or to the Internet. Routers are both wired and wireless. So what’s the difference between the two?

As the name suggests, a wired router uses a cable to connect to the computer and enable network connection. They use LAN Ethernet ports to connect to a modem, and access the ISP, by running cable between a computer to the router and from there to the Ethernet or DSL port. Despite the line is connected to a single computer, the router still allows sharing of the connection to any device that is connected to the network.

On the other hand wireless router use a Wi-Fi connection to communication between the ISP to the router, enabling the wireless frequency to connect to any device that logs on to it. This allows multiple users to access the network easily, by using a password. Access points amplify Wi-Fi signals, so that a device can be far from the router but can still be connected to the network.

In terms of speed, previously it was thought that wired router were much faster and more secure than wireless routers. Although, recent technological advancements have led to the adoption of Wi-Fi 6, a new networking standard; which has eroded the speed and security difference between a wireless router and a wired router.
